Bob Levine: Adobe still sell it, so it's not quite dead. Like my dad, 74, who has used PM since the year dot and for whom I'm trying to make this work. The Tryout installs and works fine on Windows 8; maybe I should hide this fact and take out a big bet with long odds at my local bookie!
Claudio: good idea with the external USB drive. I was thinking of making a disc image of the install disc and mounting it virtually, but a €20 drive sounds easier.
