A good way to handle font importing mishaps is to use the Find Font dialog. (Don't worry, it uses icons instead of colors, which may be clearer.)
I always check Find Fonts right after importing text to check on fonts that are missing right off the bat, but also for ones that appear to have been used to insert nonstandard characters with (Symbol for Greek, for example; a good font has its own Greek).
Photoshop has a "Color Blindness" test preview. Perhaps this would be interesting for InDesign as well (and, come to think of it, also for Illustrator...)
