Painting/drawing sometimes adds/deletes existing paths?

When drawing with the Pencil or painting with the Paintbrush, I keep the option to keep selected turned on. Sometimes when I draw a new path near an existing one it either adds to the existing path, OR it deletes the existing one and draws/paints a new one. Why is this and how do you change this?
