RED footage freezes system

Hey guys, this is our first big project using RED footage, so i'm looking for some feedback on ways that we can speed things up the next time around.

Here's the situation, when working with RED footage (4k from RED Scarlet) in Premiere OR After Effects, the playback will frequently stop and freeze not only the program, but the entire system. Sometimes this only lasts for a few seconds, sometimes as long as a minute. I'll usually get a "Program Not Responding" message up in the window title bar, the program/window may glitch a few times (like flash really quickly) along with the icons down in the program bar, then the computer returns to normal operation, and I continue on until this happens again, usually a few minutes later. This occurs when the sequence is unrendered (displays yellow render bar)

In After Effects, the program may go unresponsive just by clicking a RED clip in the project asset browser.

In Premiere, if I render the sequence, the playback occurs with no issues, and no program freezes occur.

Here's my system:

Windows 7 64bit

Creative Cloud CC 2014 (all programs updated)

Intel 3770k

16 gb ram

Nvidia Quadro k4000

Intel SSD 240gb (OS/program drive)

Crucial M4 256gb (media cache drive)

Drobo 5tb via USB 3.0 (where the project resides)

My installation of windows is fresh (within the last month), and all my drivers appear to be current and updated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Dan
